📖 原文/对话(来源:TED「How to Start a Movement」)

Derek Sivers opens his famous three-minute TED talk with a deceptively simple piece of footage: a young man dancing alone, shirtless, on a hillside at a music festival. At first, he looks like a “lone nut” — someone most people would walk past without a second thought. But then something fascinating happens. A single person in the crowd gets up, walks over, and starts dancing beside him. In Sivers’ words, this is the pivotal moment: the first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.

The lesson is counter-intuitive. We tend to glorify the leader — the person brave enough to stand alone. Yet Sivers argues that leadership is often over-rated, and that the first follower performs an underestimated form of leadership. By joining, the follower gives the lone nut legitimacy, shows everyone else how to participate, and publicly declares that this strange behavior is acceptable. When a second person joins, the group is no longer a cult around one eccentric; it becomes a movement. After that, the threshold drops fast. Newcomers no longer emulate the original leader — they copy the other followers, which makes joining feel safe and normal rather than ridiculous.

Sivers distills three practical rules. First, be public: a movement can only spread if it is visible to others. Second, if you are the leader, make it easy to follow you and nurture your first followers as equals, never as subordinates. Third, and perhaps the most useful takeaway for the rest of us: if you see someone doing something great, have the courage to be the first follower. The world needs people willing to stand beside the lone nut — because that is exactly where every real movement begins.

    • “The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.”
    • “Leadership is over-rated.”
    • “Have the guts to be the first follower.”

Q1:Describe a time you were the “first follower.” I was the first one to… / At the time nobody else…

Q2:Why do people hesitate to be the first to follow? People worry about looking foolish / It feels safer to wait and see.

Q3:If you wanted to start a movement, what would it be? If I wanted to start…, I would first…

  1. 弱读与连读:the first follower 里 the 弱读成 /ðə/,a movement 中 a 弱读成 /ə/,连起来听感更自然;not a cult 的 /t/ 在 /ə/ 后可轻吞。

“The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.” ——Derek Sivers
