Every child deserves a champion — an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

I’ve spent my entire life, either at home or at school, and I’ve come to the conclusion that what we do is not about a lesson plan; it’s about a relationship. A colleague said to me, “They don’t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a lesson. The kids should learn it. I should teach it. They should learn it. Case closed.” I said, “You know, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.”

Some of you think, “This is touchy-feely; this is not rigorous; this is not data-driven.” I know. But here’s the thing: students don’t always learn what we want them to learn, but they always learn how we make them feel. I had a student who said, “You say I’m failures?” I said, “No. You may have failed, but you are not a failure.” There is a difference. So I told him, “You’re smart, and I can prove it.” We took his test papers, drew a line from the first wrong answer to the last wrong answer, and between those two points, there was a straight line. He said, “I see it. I’m a straight-line kinda guy.”

We went through the roof academically. But more importantly, we connected. We’re educators. We’re born to make a difference. Is this job tough? You betcha. But those kids are worth it — every single one of them.
